Emergency Medical Services Corporation established the EMSC Charitable
Foundation in 2005 in the
wake of the devastating impact to employees of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The Foundation operates with the primary mission
to provide financial assistance to employees of EMSC and its affiliated
companies in times of severe need. The
Foundation makes a monetary grant to the employee based on his/her particular need.
While devastating disasters such as the
2005 hurricanes may cause a great need for assistance to many employees, most
of the grants made by the Foundation respond to individual employee situations.
How Does the Foundation Help Employees in Need?
Once an employee has exhausted qualifying PTO/vacation
time, he/she can make a request for assistance. Alternatively, the employee’s supervisor may
make the request on the employee’s behalf. Request forms are available from
Human Resources. All employees and
clinicians affiliated with EMSC or its subsidiaries, affiliates, or managed
companies are eligible to make requests to the Foundation for assistance.
How is “Severe Need” Defined?
Employees may be eligible for a grant up to $10,000
for the following types of potential qualifying events:
- Death of employee or relative,
- Uncontrollable loss of income resulting in potential loss of home,
- Non-insured traumatic medical expenses,
- Hospitalization or incapacitation of employee or relative, resulting in employee’s inability to
work for more than seven days,
- Complete home loss due to fire or other natural cause, or
- A combination of these.
Where Does the Foundation Get its Funding?
The EMSC Charitable Foundation relies almost
entirely on the generosity of its employees and physicians for funding. The
Foundation incurs virtually no administrative expenses, as these are largely
donated by the Corporation. Nearly 100% of the dollars donated by employees are
used to help fellow employees in times of severe need.
How Many Employee Requests Does the Foundation Receive?
During 2006, the Foundation has received an average of
three employee requests each week. The Foundation’s ability to provide grants
to employees in severe need depends entirely upon the dollars available from
donations, in large part from our employees and affiliated clinicians.
How Can I Help My Colleagues and Coworkers?
There are several ways to donate to the Foundation.
You may make an ongoing commitment to helping your colleagues through a regular
or one-time payroll deduction.You may
donate PTO/vacation time, which the Foundation will convert to cash at your
regular hourly rate. Or, you may make a direct contribution by check to the
Foundation. Your contributions may be tax deductible.
