AMR Celebrates 25 Years of Service in El Paso County
Colorado Springs , CO, May 19,
2004 – American Medical Response (AMR) will celebrate 25 years of paramedic ambulance service in El Paso County tomorrow, May 20. The celebration takes place during Emergency Medical Services Week, an annual event that recognizes the work done by paramedics and EMTs nationwide. The celebration will be in honor of James R. Wood, who in 1979 brought the first paramedic ambulance service to El Paso County . A bronze plaque that will hang at AMR will be dedicated to Wood during the ceremony tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at the AMR base of Operations, 2370 N. Powers Blvd. , Colorado Springs .
The ambulance service that was founded and owned by Wood was A-1 Paramedics. That service merged with AMR in 1993 and - Wood remained with the company serving as the CEO of AMR Colorado until 1995. Wood passed away in November of 1995.
AMR has been a longstanding community partner in El Paso County . In 1996 AMR became the first contracted ambulance provider for the City of Colorado Springs and El Paso County . In 1999 the Partners In Philanthropy named AMR Philanthropic Corporation of the year for Colorado Springs . In 2000 AMR was awarded Ambulance Service of the Year by the Colorado Department of Transportation. In 2001 the AMR Dispatch Center received accreditation from the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch (NAEMD) and in 2003 AMR received accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Ambulance Service (CAAS). Only eight ambulance services out of 17,000 nationwide hold these dual accreditations.
