AMR offers residents a cost-free way to begin a rewarding career in EMS

At a time of a national EMS shortage, Rochester City Councilwoman LaShay Harris joined American Medical Response (AMR) Rochester today to announce it is hiring a new class of EMTs and will pay them for on-the-job training.

“EMS is one of the most rewarding ways to be able to help people in our community,” said Councilwoman Harris, who has spent more than 27 years serving Rochester as an EMT and paramedic. “AMR’s Earn While You Learn academy will do so much more than provide jobs. By recruiting local people through strong partnerships with the City of Rochester, we demonstrate commitment to our citizens and community.” She previously served as a Paramedic Preceptor, CPR Instructor, business development manager and continues as an Educator.

The company’s award-winning Earn While You Learn program is designed to ease the transition for those wanting to become EMS professionals. Participants are hired as employees and compensated while attending AMR’s EMT-Basic certification course. Upon successful completion of the program and obtaining their state certification, participants are promoted to full-time status as an EMT-B, with a commensurate pay increase.

“AMR is thrilled to announce it is accepting applications for the first Earn While You Learn academy in Rochester,” said Mark Philippy, Operations Manager. “We recognize the current challenges in EMS, not just in Rochester, but throughout the country. Our way of helping in real time is to bring people from the grassroots community, with no experience in EMS, and pay them to become full time EMTs. We are excited to train a class of future life-savers in Rochester.”

Earn While You Learn is an opportunity to both help the community and underpin the New York economy. The program has proved successful for those hoping to start a career in emergency services. Anyone who is compassionate, cares about helping their community and wants to work for a terrific company with great benefits is encouraged to apply for the Earn While You Learn Program and start on the path to saving lives, all while being paid to learn.

The program is an exciting opportunity for Rochester residents who want to begin a rewarding career in EMS. The program was nationally recognized late last year by the American Ambulance Association in the Employee Programs Category.
