Heading for the Home Stretch

Next month will mark the one-year anniversary of the AMR/Rural Metro handshake that has come to symbolize the union of our two companies. The past 11 months have brought significant changes for not only the 6,000 Rural Metro employees but also the 22,000 men and women of AMR. As the integration of our companies enters its final stage, we are now the largest and most dynamic emergency medical services company in the country. Together, we respond 12,300 times a day to patients in need. We make a difference in someone’s life 4.5 million times a year.

We accomplished a lot since Oct. 28, 2015, when Rural Metro officially became part of AMR, including the successful integration of overlapping markets, the hiring of more caregivers for Rural Metro locations and improved performance in a number of key areas.

More recently, our MEDS implementation was completed. The Telestaff and Kronos rollout remains on schedule and will be completed soon, and our rebranding initiative is moving forward with several more markets soon to begin the process. As we enter the final stage, more back-end processes will move to AMR, including payroll and benefits. You’ll be hearing more about that next month.

There have also been challenges to address and difficult but necessary changes to make, including withdrawing from some markets and selling several operations. Unfortunately, in those cases, we were unable to make adjustments to the local market’s system design and the misalignment of costs and reimbursement, the same issues that affected Rural Metro’s bankruptcy.

From the beginning, our vision for the integration of AMR and Rural Metro has remained constant; create a vibrant, robust and sustainable organization for our 28,000 team members and the communities we serve. We have come far, and although there have been a few bumps in the road, I feel very good about where we are and what we have accomplished together.

As we head into the home stretch, let me thank all of you for your support and encouragement. We have several more important milestones to meet, but the finish line is within sight, and we have a clear direction and purpose.

Let me know your thoughts. Please send your comments and questions to amrpresident@amr.net.
